Crippling College Expenses

During the 2016 election, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont reached out to millennials across the country on a common issue: the growing cost of college expenses.  It’s no secret that college expenses are greater than they have ever been.  Half a century ago, tuition cost most families just $5,000, peanuts compared to modern day fees at many universities, which exceed $40,000 a year.  Even with financial aid opportunities, many students are left thousands of dollars in debt.

The Rising Cost of College

According to a recent study by the College Board, the average cost of attendance to American colleges- a figure that includes the cost of tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies, and personal expenses- is $24,610 for in-state public colleges. For private colleges this figure nearly doubles to an average cost of $49,320.
